How to Choose the Right Pendant Light Size
Choosing the right size pendant light can make or break a room. Too small and it gets lost; too large and it overwhelms the space. This guide takes the guesswork out of pendant sizing for every room in your home.
Kitchen Island Pendants
For kitchen islands, the general rule is to hang pendants 70–80cm above the benchtop. For a standard 900mm–1200mm island, one large pendant (30–40cm diameter) or two to three smaller pendants (15–20cm diameter) spaced 60cm apart works beautifully. Allow at least 30cm clearance from each end of the island.
Dining Room Pendants
Your pendant should be roughly half to two-thirds the width of your dining table. For a 1800mm table, aim for a pendant or cluster spanning 900mm–1200mm. Hang it 70–80cm above the tabletop for the best ambience and visibility.
Entryway & Hallway Pendants
In double-height entries, a statement pendant with a long drop cord creates drama. Ensure the bottom of the pendant sits at least 210cm from the floor in walkthrough areas. For standard ceiling heights (2.4m), a compact pendant 20–30cm in diameter works well.
Bedroom Pendants
Bedside pendants are a stylish alternative to table lamps. Hang them 40–50cm above the mattress surface, positioned directly beside the pillow. A shade diameter of 15–25cm is ideal for bedside use.
Staircase & Void Pendants
Voids and staircases call for long-drop pendants. Measure from ceiling to the desired hanging height — typically leaving 210cm clearance at the lowest walkthrough point. Cluster pendants at varying heights for a dramatic, layered effect.
